Ukraine Says It Has Struck Key Russian Infrastructure in Coordinated Offensive

Poinews.com – Ukraine says it has struck a major Russian military and industrial hub, marking a significant escalation in its long-range campaign against Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that Ukrainian forces successfully targeted the Progress Rocket and Space Centre located in Russia's Samara region. This critical facility is central to the manufacturing and operation of space launch vehicles for the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. In a detailed post on X, Zelenskyy confirmed that the centre was hit using FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles. He described the Progress Centre as one of Roscosmos' "key enterprises" and highlighted its vital role in "electronics production" essential for the Russian military.

In addition to the primary target, the Ukrainian leader reported that additional strikes were carried out on the Savasleyka air base in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Zelenskyy noted that this air base houses aircraft specifically used for missile attacks on Ukrainian territory. Furthermore, an oil facility in Ust-Luga, situated close to the border with Estonia, was also targeted in the coordinated operation. He shared video footage on X appearing to show the aftermath of some of the strikes. Large columns of black smoke and flames can be seen at sites in the distance, providing visual confirmation of the damage inflicted.

Strategic Goals and War Potential Reduction

"Our plan of long-range sanctions against Russia for this war is being implemented, and it is important that Russia’s war potential be reduced," Zelenskyy wrote, emphasizing the strategic nature of these attacks. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has since shared more details on the operation as well as its intelligence on the targets. They confirmed hits were recorded at both the Progress centre and the air base and that a fire had broken out on the facilities' grounds. It added that the launch vehicles produced at the Progress centre were used to "place Russian military, reconnaissance, and communications spacecraft into orbit." The Savasleyka air base, the General Staff added, is used to operate MiG-31K fighter jets, which it said were used to carry Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missiles.
