Not far from the glass-enclosed Ku-An in the remote community of Hitachi-ota stands Lu-An, which debuted the previous year. This companion installation employs over 2,000 plastic cylinders containing soil and compost, generating 100 watts of power—sufficient to operate a rice cooker alongside other household devices.

According to Nakagawa, this technology holds promise for regions lacking conventional power infrastructure, particularly following natural catastrophes. It could also sustain off-grid equipment requiring minimal energy, including agricultural pest-detection sensors, river overflow monitors, landslide warning systems, and security alarms. Once deployed, the system emits zero carbon dioxide and operates independently of weather conditions, unlike solar or wind alternatives.

Beyond utility, Nakagawa has explored creative applications. His prototype "stand-alone node" resembles a bollard and facilitates satellite data transmission using soil power. He has also incorporated the technology into artistic displays featuring flexible rods that, when inserted into the ground, emit glowing tips reminiscent of fireflies dancing above tall grass.

"Even if it's just a small contribution, I want people to be able to produce their own electricity using the soil around them," the Japanese product designer and engineer told AFP.

Expert Perspectives and Future Outlook

While professional engineers acknowledge the aesthetic appeal and thought-provoking nature of Nakagawa's creations, many question their practical viability. Masayuki Nakao, engineering professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, has observed Nakagawa's work for years.

"Its output is significantly inferior compared with regular batteries or car batteries," Nakao noted. "But what is notable about Mr Nakagawa's works is that the light that he creates has the power to move our emotions. People are moved by it when they see the lights. They are beautiful."

Nakagawa remains undeterred by criticism. He encourages engineers to develop products that leverage MPC capabilities. "I say it's micro power, so we have to think about what micro power can do," he stated. "We should look at the combination of various energy-harvesting technologies as crucial to our overall energy strategy." With unwavering confidence, he concludes: "Possibility is without limit."
