Greece is the most popular luxury honeymoon destination for 2027 – with Italy and France also in the top 10
Greece is the most popular luxury honeymoon destination for 2027
Poinews.com – Greece is the most popular luxury honeymoon destination for 2027, according to Virtuoso’s latest Luxe Report. The country takes first place ahead of Bali and the Maldives, which rank second and third, while Italy comes fourth and France eighth.
The results place three European countries in the top 10 destinations for affluent couples planning a post-wedding trip. French Polynesia, Japan, Fiji, Thailand and South Africa also feature in the ranking.
Virtuoso’s annual report draws on insights from more than 3,100 travel advisers in over 50 countries. Honeymoons ranked sixth among the leading reasons for affluent travel in 2027, alongside milestone celebrations and the appeal of discovering somewhere new.
Why Greece is leading luxury honeymoon travel
Greece is the most popular choice because it offers romance, dramatic scenery, food, history, culture and a broad selection of luxury hotels. It also ranked fourth among Virtuoso’s most popular global destinations for luxury travel overall.
“Greece took the top spot for 2027, ending Italy’s long-standing lead, while Italy remained in the top five and France also placed in the top 10,” said Misty Belles, Vice President, Global Public Relations at Virtuoso.
Kayla Zeigler, founder and travel adviser at Destination Europe, an affiliate of Virtuoso, said Greece is particularly suited to honeymooners because of its mix of “romance, spectacular scenery, exceptional food, history and culture” and luxury accommodation.
Couples are increasingly looking beyond the traditional Santorini and Mykonos pairing, according to Zeigler. While those islands remain well known, they have become busier and more geared towards cruise tourism. Paros, Milos and Crete are emerging as alternatives for travellers seeking a more relaxed and authentic island stay without giving up luxury.
The Athens Riviera is also attracting attention, with new luxury hotels offering couples a coastal option alongside the history and energy of Athens. Honeymooners can spend time in the capital before retreating to the coast and continuing to the islands.
Italy and France remain leading European honeymoon choices
Italy and France continue to appeal to couples taking their first trip to Europe, especially those keen to experience iconic destinations such as Rome, Florence and Paris. However, advisers are seeing growing interest in combining famous cities with places that feel more intimate, authentic and less saturated.
In Italy, Ischia is increasingly recommended instead of Capri for couples visiting the Amalfi Coast region. Zeigler highlighted its hotels, thermal spas, food and more relaxed island atmosphere. Piedmont and Umbria are also being chosen in place of Tuscany, while Puglia remains popular for its masserias, coastline and cuisine.
The Dolomites are another strong option for newlyweds, combining mountain scenery, wellness, outdoor experiences and luxury hotels. Pairing the region with Venice can create a varied Italian honeymoon itinerary.
In France, couples are looking beyond Paris by adding Provence or the French Riviera. Champagne is a natural match for a celebratory trip, while Burgundy and Bordeaux appeal to honeymooners interested in food and wine. These combinations allow travellers to balance a lively city break with a slower-paced countryside or coastal stay.
