US Missions Urge Americans to Remain Alert as Houthi-Saudi Fighting Intensifies

Security messages issued by US embassies in Bahrain, Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates described the regional situation as complex and cautioned that the military confrontation could escalate with little warning. Missiles and drones claimed in attacks

The warnings followed a statement by the Houthis on Saturday claiming responsibility for two operations against Saudi targets. The group said it used ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones in response to Saudi strikes.

The first targeted sensitive sites in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and the second targeted Aramco facilities in Yanbu.

A representative of the Saudi-led coalition later said Saudi air defence forces intercepted a ballistic missile heading toward Riyadh. The coalition was created in 2015 to support Yemen’s internationally recognised government in its conflict with the Houthis.

The coalition spokesperson said the Houthi operations also targeted Baish, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu. The locations span several parts of Saudi Arabia, illustrating the geographical reach claimed by the rebel movement and the challenge facing Saudi authorities as they seek to protect population centres, infrastructure and transport links.

Residents in Riyadh said flames and smoke were visible at King Khalid International Airport on Saturday. Images shared on social media appeared to show a large plume rising near the airport. Flight tracking service Flightradar24 said the facility was facing major problems at the time.

Airports play a particularly sensitive role during periods of regional military tension. Even when an incident does not result in a prolonged closure, heightened security measures can affect departures, arrivals and aircraft routing. The embassy alerts urged Americans to monitor developments closely and account for possible interruptions to planned travel.

Pressure grows around Saudi Arabia and Yemen

The Houthis declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia in July and have stepped up attacks on Saudi cities and shipping. Those actions have added to already high tensions across the Middle East, where security incidents can carry consequences beyond the immediate area of fighting.

Saudi Arabia has responded with strikes against the Houthis. Yet the group has continued to advance after taking control of large areas of Yemen this month during a rapid offensive. At a Friday briefing, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, highlighted the human cost of the renewed violence in Yemen. He said insecurity and limits on humanitarian access were making it difficult to establish the full scale of civilian casualties.

Since hostilities escalated in August, the Human Rights office has documented 110 civilian casualties in 31 incidents, including 28 killed and 82 injured, across Taizz, Al Hudaydah and Marib. Insecurity and access constraints continue to hamper our ability to verify the actual number as you can imagine is very likely higher.

The figures cover incidents in Taizz, Al Hudaydah and Marib, three areas affected by the conflict. Restricted access can leave aid agencies and monitors unable to reach communities quickly, while damaged infrastructure and continued fighting can make it harder for civilians to obtain essential assistance.

We urge all parties, and those with influence over them, to act immediately to de-escalate, protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access. Every effort must be made to prevent further loss of life.

The renewed warnings from US embassies come as the conflict’s military and humanitarian dimensions increasingly overlap.
