The comprehensive network encompasses 1,546 kilometers of scenic routes weaving through six distinct regions: Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Tuscany, and Umbria. Each trail ultimately leads pilgrims to Assisi, the historic hometown where Saint Francis was born.

Commemorating an Eighth Centenary

The unveiling of this trail network coincides with celebrations marking eight hundred years since the passing of Italy’s beloved patron saint. The timing also precedes a significant papal visit to Assisi scheduled for Thursday, August 6.

Practical Information for Pilgrims

Before embarking on their journey, travelers can obtain their credenziale, or pilgrim’s passport, through an online application process. This document receives stamps and date markings at various points along the route. Each trail offers its own version of the passport, and notably, pet owners can secure special passports for their animal companions as well.

Those who successfully complete the final 100 kilometers to Saint Francis’s tomb on foot, or cover 200 kilometers by bicycle, will receive official documentation confirming their pilgrimage achievement.
