Virgin Trains Receives Key Green Light to Contest Eurostar’s Cross-Channel Dominance

Poinews.com – The UK’s rail watchdog, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), confirmed on Monday that Sir Richard Branson’s rail venture has been granted track access to operate from London St Pancras along High Speed 1 — the high-speed corridor linking the capital to the Channel Tunnel in Kent. The permission window spans 1 October 2030 through 31 December 2040.

With this clearance, Virgin Trains is positioned to launch as many as 20 daily return journeys between London and Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam beginning in 2030. If realised, the operation would dismantle the three-decade passenger monopoly Eurostar has held over tunnel crossings, offering travellers a second rail option for crossing the Channel.

Depot Access and Remaining Bottlenecks

The latest approval builds on a concession granted late last year allowing Virgin to share Eurostar’s Temple Mills depot in London for stabling and maintenance. That facility is the sole depot reachable from High Speed 1, making the arrangement a practical necessity.

However, Virgin has not yet secured permission to traverse the Channel Tunnel itself. Because the tunnel is owned by Eurotunnel, a distinct commercial agreement will be required before any train can pass through.

Company Response

“Our plans for a new London – Europe rail service from 2030 are moving at pace. We welcome the ORR’s pre-approval of our track access agreement and the opportunity to bring competition and Virgin’s award-winning customer experience to the Channel Tunnel.”

The statement came from a Virgin Group spokesperson. Earlier, Branson himself had declared it was “time to end this 30-year monopoly and bring some Virgin magic to the cross-Channel route.”

Path to Launch

The ORR stressed that “still more work to do” remains before any service can begin. Virgin Trains must obtain safety certifications from both the ORR and equivalent EU regulators, and it must negotiate access rights across additional rail networks along its intended itineraries. The company intends to terminate at the very same Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam stations currently served by Eurostar.
