More than a thousand residences have sustained damage, though officials note that evaluation efforts remain ongoing. Local leaders caution that rebuilding housing infrastructure, restoring essential services, and reviving economic activity could require months or even years to complete.

Search-and-rescue teams continue their work in the hardest-hit areas as communities confront an extended period of recovery and uncertainty.

Town-by-Town Impact Assessment

El Cairo, a settlement of approximately 7,000 inhabitants positioned close to the earthquake’s epicentre, has suffered particularly severe consequences. Municipal representatives estimate that roughly 80 percent of residential properties and public structures have been either damaged or completely destroyed. The combination of landslides, obstructed roadways, and continuing aftershocks has displaced numerous residents into temporary accommodations.

In Roldanillo, citizens made their way back to damaged thoroughfares and commercial establishments to recover usable items. The death toll in this municipality reached at least two, among them councillor Juan Carlos García Castañeda, who perished when a section of a gymnasium caved in. Hundreds of homes and businesses sustained damage, leading authorities to declare a state of public calamity and implement a curfew during nighttime hours. With electricity and water supplies interrupted, many households spent the night outdoors or in emergency shelters. Merchants worked through piles of debris searching for recoverable merchandise, confronting the potential loss of their means of survival.

Zarzal experienced damage to approximately 700 dwellings, with several structures reduced to rubble. At least one individual lost their life in this town. Emergency personnel conducted door-to-door evaluations to determine which residents required shelter and provisions. Streets became impassable due to scattered debris, and certain severely compromised buildings may require demolition.

The earthquake, which occurred on August 10, has left the Valle del Cauca region facing a protracted cleanup operation. As assessments continue, officials anticipate that full recovery will demand sustained effort and resources from both local government and affected communities.
