Fire on Cargo Ship in Qingdao Leaves 25 Dead

Poinews.com – Twenty-five people have died after a fire erupted on an international cargo vessel undergoing repairs at a shipyard in Qingdao, eastern China. The blaze broke out on September 10 aboard the Ocean Melody, a Liberian-flagged ship docked at Beihai Shipbuilding Co.

Forty-two people were on the vessel when the emergency began. Seventeen were brought to safety, including five people who sustained injuries and received medical attention. Authorities later confirmed that the remaining 25 people, initially listed as missing, had been found dead.

“As of 7:24 pm on September 10, all 25 missing persons had been found, none showing signs of life.”

The fire began at roughly 11:15 am local time, or 03:15 GMT. Emergency crews brought the visible flames under control at about 2:30 pm local time. The incident unfolded while the ship was being repaired, underscoring the heightened risks that can arise during maintenance work on large commercial vessels.

Rescue Effort at Major Shipping Hub

Qingdao is one of China’s major coastal shipping centres, and the shipyard where the vessel was docked is operated by Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. The facility handles large-scale shipbuilding and repair work, activities that can involve confined spaces, heavy machinery, electrical systems and potentially hazardous materials.

Emergency responders focused first on extinguishing the fire and locating those unable to leave the ship. The scale of the death toll indicates that the rescue operation continued long after the open flames were put out, as crews searched the vessel for missing workers and others believed to be trapped inside.

Images released by the official Xinhua news agency identified the ship as the Ocean Melody. Public vessel-tracking information lists the cargo ship as sailing under Liberia’s flag.

National Leaders Call for Investigation

President Xi Jinping issued what state media described as “important instructions” calling for urgent rescue efforts for those still missing. Premier Li Qiang called for searches for trapped people, medical care for the injured and measures to avoid further accidents at the scene.

“[Search for and rescue] trapped” people, provide medical treatment for those injured, “and strictly prevent secondary disasters”.

Xi also urged authorities across the country to treat the disaster as a warning and examine fire-safety risks more closely.

“All regions and relevant departments must draw profound lessons from this incident, thoroughly investigate and rectify all types of fire hazards.”

Such calls typically place attention on whether safety procedures were followed during repairs and whether similar risks exist at other industrial sites. Any formal investigation will likely examine the origin of the fire, the conditions on board at the time, evacuation arrangements and the response once the emergency was raised.

Why Shipyard Fires Can Be Especially Dangerous

Fire incidents on ships can become particularly difficult to manage because vessels contain enclosed compartments, narrow corridors and multiple decks. During repair work, access routes may be altered, while welding, electrical work or other maintenance activity can add to operational hazards. Smoke can also spread quickly through internal sections of a ship, making escape and rescue more challenging.

The Ocean Melody was not at sea when the fire started; it was moored for repairs at the Qingdao shipyard. Even so, the incident demonstrates that major maritime emergencies can occur while a vessel is in port, where repair activity and large numbers of personnel may be concentrated in a limited area.

The five injured survivors were among the 17 people evacuated safely. No further details about their conditions, the identities of those killed or the suspected cause of the fire were immediately released.

Investigation Expected as Details Emerge

Authorities have not yet established publicly what triggered the blaze. The next phase will involve determining how the fire began and whether any factors contributed to the high number of fatalities. Officials will also be expected to assess whether additional safeguards are needed for repair operations involving large vessels.
