Heatwave Leaves Europe with Thousands of Excess Deaths

France Records Sharp Rise in Mortality
France reported 2,025 additional deaths during the week of 22 June, marking a nearly 30% surge compared to usual levels. This spike occurred during the height of the country’s extreme weather, with authorities acknowledging the figures are still under review.
“The true death toll is probably an underestimate,” warned France’s national public health agency, Santé publique France.
Belgium’s Death Toll Matches Pandemic Highs
Belgium experienced a 39% increase in mortality, totaling 1,222 extra deaths between 18 and 29 June. This figure equals the highest daily death toll the country has seen since the initial wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Netherlands and Spain Highlight Elderly Vulnerability
The Netherlands saw around 480 additional deaths during the 22–28 June period, with the most significant effects observed among individuals aged 80 and above. In Spain, the Carlos III Health Institute documented at least 1,028 heat-related fatalities, surpassing the 407 recorded in June 2025.
Government Responses Under Scrutiny
As scorching conditions are forecasted to persist, officials are facing pressure to enhance preparedness. Belgium’s Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke has directed the Risk Management Group to submit recommendations by early next week. Meanwhile, France’s opposition parties have criticized the government’s readiness for rising temperatures, with the Greens recently filing a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s administration.
