Poinews.com – The Portuguese Navy has released new data from the Faro Buoy, a component of the MONIZEE coastal monitoring system, which shows a daily sea surface temperature average of approximately 25°C. This follows two consecutive marine heatwaves, with the first categorized as moderate and the second reaching a stronger intensity.

During the first event, temperatures peaked at 23.3°C, surpassing the 90th percentile by about 1.5°C. The second heatwave saw a maximum of 24.8°C, exceeding the 90th percentile threshold by 2.2°C. A post shared by the Portuguese Navy (@marinhaportuguesa) highlights these findings as part of a broader analysis of coastal oceanic conditions.

Significance of Temperature Fluctuations

According to the report, the MONIZEE network enables real-time tracking of sea temperatures, offering critical insights into extreme weather events along Portugal’s coastline. The data indicates that surface temperatures hit a record high of 26.1°C during the period studied, underscoring the extent of recent warming trends.

“This value clearly illustrates the magnitude of the warming observed, although the classification of a marine heatwave depends on the persistence of the event and not just on an isolated temperature spike,” the statement reads.

The Navy emphasizes that such information is vital for monitoring environmental changes, analyzing ocean thermal patterns, and aiding maritime operations that rely on stable sea conditions.
