A U.S.-based firm, Foundation Future Industries, has already deployed its Phantom robots in Ukraine, signaling that the integration of such technology into military operations may occur faster than anticipated. These humanoid robots, designed to mimic human movements and perform complex tasks, are now being tested in real-world conflicts, raising concerns about their potential role in future warfare.
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics has enabled machines to adapt, learn, and operate with increasing autonomy. While some may view humanoid robots as futuristic tools, their application in warfare is becoming tangible. According to the firm’s CEO, Sankaet Pathak, the next phase of weaponization could arrive by early 2027, following successful trials in Ukraine. “There’s a psychological reaction, like the Terminator, but the reality is it’s not that extreme,” Pathak noted in an interview with Euronews Next. “Why would you deploy humanoids if your goal is to cause destruction?” he added, emphasizing that these robots are tailored for precision, not brute force.
Strategic Advantages and Military Applications
Humanoid robots offer unique advantages in battlefield scenarios, particularly in environments where traditional methods face limitations. Their ability to navigate complex terrains, interact with objects, and perform tasks like reconnaissance or logistics makes them valuable assets. In Ukraine, the firm’s robots have been used to carry out missions that reduce the risk to human soldiers, such as inspecting damaged infrastructure or engaging in close-quarters combat. This real-world testing highlights how AI-powered systems can be deployed for targeted objectives, ensuring minimal collateral damage while maintaining operational efficiency.
Pathak’s team has focused on developing “world models” that simulate environmental interactions and predict outcomes. These models allow the robots to anticipate threats and adjust strategies dynamically, a capability that could revolutionize warfare. “Our focus is on world models that can foresee future events,” Pathak explained. “That’s key to creating reliable, intuitive AI.” While the technology is still evolving, its potential for military use is evident. Experts predict that by 2027, humanoid robots may be employed in urban warfare, where their dexterity and adaptability could outperform drones or conventional machinery.
Legal and Ethical Challenges in Autonomous Warfare
As humanoid robots become more prevalent in warfare, legal frameworks are struggling to keep pace. Currently, there is no dedicated treaty specifically addressing these machines, and they operate under international humanitarian law (IHL). IHL requires weapons to distinguish between combatants and non-combatants, a principle that may not be sufficient for fully autonomous systems. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guiterrez has expressed concerns about “lethal autonomous weapon systems,” referring to them as “killer robots” in a LinkedIn post. He warned that machines selecting targets without human oversight could lead to unintended consequences, such as civilian casualties or strategic miscalculations.
