Letta Warns of Europe’s Need for Unity to Avoid Becoming a ‘Colony’
Poinews.com – Letta – Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta has called for a renewed push to strengthen European integration, emphasizing that the continent risks losing its autonomy if it fails to act decisively. Speaking during an interview with Euronews’ Europe Today programme, Letta highlighted the urgency of accelerating the single market’s development and implementing a cohesive industrial strategy to counter growing influence from global powers.
“We don’t want to be under the control of the US or China. Our goal is to remain true to European values and sovereignty,” he stated, underscoring the importance of unity in shaping a distinct economic identity.
In 2024, Letta released a report that directly influenced the EU’s strategic framework for enhancing competitiveness. Titled “Much More Than a Market,” the document stressed the need to harmonize critical sectors across Europe, including energy, digital services, and financial markets. It also proposed a “fifth freedom” of research and innovation to prioritize knowledge-based growth in EU policy.
Greenland as a Catalyst for European Action
Letta pointed to US President Donald Trump’s bold claims about seizing Greenland as a pivotal moment that sparked European leaders to act. “The past three months have seen a noticeable shift in focus,” he remarked, noting that the Trump administration’s rhetoric contributed to a heightened awareness of the need for solidarity.
The European Commission recently unveiled its strategy, “One Europe, One Market,” which outlines 42 reforms aimed at completing the single market. Each initiative has a defined timeline, with most expected to be finalized within two years. Among the proposals are the Industrial Accelerator Act and the EU Inc framework, designed to simplify business operations across the continent.
Letta reiterated that these efforts represent a crucial chance for Europe to consolidate its independence. “The current moment offers an opportunity for greater unity and self-reliance,” he concluded, stressing the importance of autonomous decision-making in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
