Rescue Operations Halted for British Surfer Lost in Portuguese Waters
Poinews.com – Portuguese authorities have ended their search efforts for Arran Strong, a British professional surfer who vanished from the Atlantic near Arrifana beach earlier this week. Despite extensive efforts, rescuers were unable to locate the 28-year-old athlete.
A Tragic Day on the Water
Strong, who has been competing in the World Surf League since 2016, went missing on Monday while paddleboarding alongside his coach, José Maria Pyrrait. The pair were traveling from Monte Clérigo beach toward Carrapateira when trouble struck. According to Portugal’s Autoridade Marítima Nacional (AMN), Strong encountered difficulties in the water. Pyrrait managed to reach safety aboard a nearby fishing vessel.
Coach’s Account of the Incident
In an emotional Instagram post, Pyrrait described the moments before Strong disappeared. The two had paused their journey to enjoy a beverage and capture photographs.
“When we set off again, I let him go ahead,” Pyrrait explained. “As I’m a faster paddler, I always did that – whenever I caught up with him and gained a short lead, I’d stop and wait for him. This time was no different, but when I stopped to wait, I saw his board drifting about 100 metres away.”
Pyrrait immediately paddled toward the floating board and dove into the water to search for his student.
“But we were in very deep water and visibility was very poor, so I called for help from my partner on shore, who immediately alerted the rescue services,” he continued. “A local fisherman picked me and the surfboards up, and we spent nearly two and a half hours scanning the entire surrounding area with the boat’s sonar.”
A Deep Bond
The loss has been particularly devastating for Pyrrait, who has known Strong since the athlete was just ten years old.
“Arran was like a son to me; from the age of 10, he trained with me and spent his weekends and holidays with me,” Pyrrait wrote. “My love for him was like that for another son that life had given me.”
Tributes Pour In
GB Surfing honored Strong on Instagram, describing him as both a “fantastic teammate” and “respected competitor.”
“His passing is a devastating loss to our sport and the wider surfing community, and he will be greatly missed,” the organization stated. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Arran’s family, friends, teammates and all those whose lives he touched.”
