Qatar launches exchange to expand its global diamond trade ambitions

Poinews.com – Qatar launches exchange to expand its influence in the international diamond market with the introduction of the Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE). This innovative marketplace for rough and polished diamonds is designed to connect Doha with global trading networks, positioning the nation as a key player in the precious stones industry. Located in the Ras Bufontas Free Zone, the exchange consolidates trading, certification, vaulting, customs, and industry services within one comprehensive regulated ecosystem. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Faisal Al-Thani, Qatar Free Zones Authority CEO and chairman of QDE, emphasized that this initiative represents a significant milestone in Qatar’s economic diversification strategy and its commitment to strengthening its position as a trusted participant in global diamond trade.

Building on established frameworks

The establishment of the Qatar Diamond Exchange builds upon Qatar’s longstanding participation in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, the international framework that governs the trade in conflict-free rough diamonds. Under legislation introduced in 2025, Qatar’s free zones became the country’s sole authorized entry and exit points for rough diamonds, with the Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ) designated as the competent authority overseeing all operations. This regulatory foundation provides QDE with a robust platform through which members can trade, store, and certify diamonds within a well-established framework. The exchange aims to streamline processes and reduce barriers for international participants seeking to engage with Qatar’s diamond market.

According to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Faisal Al-Thani, the vision behind the exchange is comprehensive: “Through QDE, we are bringing together the full diamond and precious stones value chain within a single regulated ecosystem spanning trading, storage, vaulting, auctions and tenders, and industry support services.” This holistic approach ensures that all stakeholders in the diamond industry can access the services they need without navigating multiple jurisdictions or regulatory bodies.

Membership and commercial advantages

Membership in the Qatar Diamond Exchange is open to a diverse range of industry participants, including diamond traders, manufacturers, cutters, and polishers, as well as industry service providers. Companies operating through the exchange can access trading licences, secure vaulting facilities, valuation services, and specialist insurance products. Additionally, businesses benefit from free-zone incentives including 100% foreign ownership and 0% corporate tax for qualifying entities, making Qatar an attractive destination for international diamond businesses seeking favorable commercial conditions.

“The Qatar Diamond Exchange represents an important step in Qatar’s efforts to further diversify its economy and strengthen its position as a trusted participant in global diamond trade,” said Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Faisal Al-Thani.

Looking ahead, QDE plans to host regular tenders that will connect diamond producers in Africa and Asia with buyers across Europe and the Gulf region. These structured procurement events are expected to facilitate more efficient matching of supply and demand, potentially reducing transaction costs and improving market transparency. As Qatar continues to develop its position in the global diamond trade, the exchange serves as both a physical and commercial hub that bridges traditional diamond centers with emerging markets.

The timing of this launch coincides with growing interest in alternative diamond trading centers beyond established hubs like Antwerp and Dubai. By leveraging Qatar’s strategic geographic location, robust infrastructure, and favorable regulatory environment, the Qatar Diamond Exchange aims to capture a meaningful share of the global diamond market. Industry observers note that the exchange’s integrated approach to trading, storage, and certification could set new standards for efficiency in the precious stones sector.
