Kanye ‘Ye’ West to perform in Russia – a first since invasion of Ukraine in 2022

Ye to Take Stage at Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg

Poinews.com – The Telegram channel of Gazprom Arena has confirmed that Kanye West — now styling himself simply as “Ye” — is slated for two stadium concerts in St Petersburg on 10 and 11 October 2026. Should those dates materialise, the American rapper would be the first major Western music act to perform inside Russia since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A Tour Marked by Cancellations

The announcement lands at the tail end of a troubled 2026 European run. England, France, Italy, Poland, and Switzerland all withdrew or cancelled West’s shows, while the Netherlands and Turkey kept his dates intact — a split that ignited a wider European debate over the boundaries of free expression. The cancellations trace back to West’s history of antisemitic remarks, including praise for Adolf Hitler and the deployment of Nazi iconography.

Roots of the Controversy

The trouble began in 2022, when a string of inflammatory social-media posts cost West his accounts on both X and Instagram. His talent agency severed ties, and fashion houses such as Adidas and Balenciaga publicly distanced themselves. West then posted an image of KKK robes, walked back his earlier apology to the Jewish community, declared himself “a Nazi,” and claimed he held “dominion over his wife.”

By February 2025 he was marketing swastika-printed t-shirts, and in May that year he dropped a track called “Heil Hitler” that lauded the Nazi dictator. The fallout was swift: Australia stripped him of his entry visa, and Brazil moved to arrest him on arrival.

Apology and Backlash

Earlier this year West placed a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal, in which he addressed his earlier antisemitic comments. He described a “four-month-long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour” and admitted he had “lost touch with reality.” Yet many observers questioned the timing of the mea culpa, given the recent release of his new album, Bully.

Russian Voices Push Back

Even the two St Petersburg shows are not guaranteed. Conservative activists in Russia have voiced opposition to any Western cultural presence, and conservative lawmaker Vitaly Milonov went further, releasing a video in which he urged West to swap his planned setlist for traditional Russian songs.

“Maybe after that he’ll stop his disgusting antics and become a normal person,” Milonov said.

Whether Gazprom Arena’s October dates ultimately proceed remains an open question.
