The musical journey commenced in 1979 when Coyote co-founded Los Coyotes alongside Fernando Gilabert, adopting the stage name that would define his public persona. While the ensemble initially operated within psychobilly territory, they gradually embraced Latin musical traditions, establishing themselves as pioneers of cross-cultural sound in Spain well before such fusion reached broader audiences.

Their first record, titled “Mujer y sentimiento,” arrived in 1985 and secured their position within the movida movement—a vibrant cultural current connecting Vigo and Madrid. Coyote emerged as one of its most dynamic participants, constantly shifting and evolving. By 1988, the group had rebranded as Los Coyotes de Víctor Abundancia, releasing what would become one of their most beloved tracks, “Esta noche me voy a bailar.” The ensemble ultimately dissolved in 1992.

Beyond Music: Comics, Film, and Visual Storytelling

Rather than pausing after the band’s conclusion, Coyote expanded his creative horizons. He had already been contributing to the publication “Madriz” between 1984 and 1987, weaving together his passions for music and sequential art. His directorial work included music videos for Los Rodríguez’s “Milonga” and “Carmiña Vacaloura,” the latter becoming part of the Xabarín Club soundtrack and remaining etched in the memories of numerous Galicians.

His contributions to graphic storytelling included the standalone comic “Come yuca,” published in 1998, alongside numerous collective works that solidified his reputation within Spain’s visual arts community. Returning to recording in 1995, he released “Lo bueno, dentro, disco,” which featured “Jaguarundi”—the official theme for that year’s Vuelta Ciclista a España.

A Life Without Boundaries

Throughout his later years, Coyote maintained an active presence across multiple disciplines. He characterized his own artistic approach as belonging to someone with “more eye than ear,” emphasizing visual sensibility alongside musical intuition. When unveiling his 2024 comic “Si te falta calle,” he reflected on the role of humor in his work, noting that while comedy remained essential, it never stood alone: capturing existence required “a little of it” alongside other elements.

His final years showed no signs of slowing. Last May, he guided audiences through his career retrospective in an interview setting. At the Festival de Cans, he served as a central figure, reflecting upon eight of his most celebrated creations. His unexpected death on Thursday concludes a remarkable trajectory—one that consistently resisted confinement to any single artistic domain.
