Germany’s Defence Chief Carsten Breuer to Lead NATO Military Committee

Breuer’s military and crisis-management experience

Breuer has been Inspector General of the Bundeswehr since March 2023, making him Germany’s highest-ranking soldier. In the role, he has overseen the country’s armed forces at their highest professional level.

Before that appointment, he led the Bundeswehr’s Territorial Command, an organisation he established to coordinate domestic military support and territorial responsibilities.

He also became known to a wider public during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he led the Federal Chancellery’s crisis staff under Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The role placed him at the centre of Germany’s national crisis coordination.
