Poinews.com – On the morning of 18 August, a GPS transmitter confirmed what thousands of online followers had been anxiously awaiting: Krutek, the celebrated white stork from Masuria, was already roughly 70 kilometres east of Lviv, drifting through the Zolochiv region of Ukraine. His departure had come two days earlier, on 16 August, when the bird launched himself into the southern sky for what ornithologists estimate will be another 5,000-kilometre trek.

A First-Time Father’s Crowded Nest

This breeding cycle carried an unprecedented dimension for the famous bird. For the first time in his life, Krutek became a parent. Five eggs hatched in his nest, though one chick perished shortly after birth. The remaining four fledglings, sheltered beneath their parents’ wings, spent July making tentative, enthusiastic attempts at flight. As the young birds grew bolder and the nest grew tighter, the adults evidently concluded that more room was needed. Krutek and his mate commenced construction of a second nest just a few dozen metres from the original structure.

Even while supervising this parallel project, Krutek never abandoned his parental obligations. He continued ferrying food to the fledglings, who used every opportunity to practise their wings. The nest eventually emptied as the four young storks dispersed into the wider landscape.

A Rough Homecoming in February

The journey back from Africa earlier this year had nearly ended in disaster. An exhausted Krutek was spotted slumped on a roadside near Jedwabno by passing pedestrians, who rushed to help. Park rangers collected the weakened bird and transported him to the stork protection centre at Krutyń. After a full rehabilitation, he was driven the final stretch to his traditional nesting site. He recovered completely, resumed tending the nest, and went on to produce his most successful brood to date.

Where Will the Route Lead?

Ornithologists remain uncertain whether this year’s southbound track will mirror his previous migrations. In recent seasons his path has threaded past the Bosphorus and deposited him for the winter months in Egypt. What makes the current GPS feed so compelling is the real-time uncertainty: where he pauses to rest, how quickly he covers each leg, and whether he revisits his well-worn stopover sites.
