Greece Faces Violent Winds as Firefighters Defend Coastal Resort

The inferno ignited on Friday close to the adjacent coastal settlement of Agios Vasileios. Initially, locals did not heed evacuation orders issued by civil protection authorities. Consequently, approximately 300 residents required maritime rescue.
France’s Massive Gironde Fire Remains Contained
Meanwhile, officials announced that France’s most significant wildfire in seven decades has been held within its boundaries near Bordeaux in the southwest. The Gironde blaze has consumed 420 square kilometers of pine woodland west of the urban center—an expanse equivalent to four times the metropolitan area of Paris. Crews confirmed the flames stayed within their perimeter on Saturday, though they had not yet reached the “fixed” status indicating no further advancement.
Active zones and hidden hot spots continued to smolder beneath the surface. Firefighters noted that while the fire had not broken beyond its established limits, the situation remained dynamic with persistent danger areas requiring constant monitoring.
Provence Blaze Continues Despite Overnight Success
In southeastern France, the Provence wildfire maintained its spread throughout Saturday. Overnight operations proved effective in preventing flames from encroaching upon the communities of Correns and Montfort-sur-Argens. Roughly 1,300 firefighters have been assigned to combat the fire, which reignited in the Gros Bessillon district. Since Friday, an additional 1,250 hectares have been consumed by the flames.
By week’s conclusion, government sources indicated that 4,500 hectares had been destroyed in total. Despite these efforts, 2,500 individuals remained displaced and unable to return to their residences. The situation reflects the broader challenge facing the region as hot weather persists across multiple departments.

Weather alerts have been issued for twenty French administrative regions, predominantly located in the eastern and southeastern portions of the country. Forecasts predict temperatures between 35 and 39 degrees Celsius throughout the Mediterranean zone. Additionally, eight departments face elevated forest-fire risk levels, prompting continued vigilance from emergency services.
Across Greece, wildfires have erupted in multiple locations this week, including the frequently visited island of Crete. Tragically, three firefighters have lost their lives in the ongoing crisis.
