Algeria Imposes Airspace Ban on UAE Aircraft Following Diplomatic Break

Poinews.com – Algeria has moved quickly to restrict Emirati aviation access after ending diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, marking a major escalation in a relationship strained for years by regional disagreements.

The Algerian defence ministry said Emirati-registered civilian and military aircraft would no longer be allowed to use Algerian airspace from Friday. A temporary exception will apply to commercial services arriving at or departing from Algiers airport, which may continue operating through the end of 2026.

The aviation decision followed Algiers’ announcement on Thursday that it was severing ties with the Gulf state. Algerian authorities described the UAE’s conduct as involving “provocative and hostile acts”, while leaving the immediate trigger for the rupture unspecified.

Ambassador given 48 hours to leave

As part of the diplomatic measures, Algeria instructed the UAE ambassador to leave the country within 48 hours. The Algerian foreign ministry said the decision had come only after repeated attempts to prevent a breakdown in bilateral relations.

“Algeria spared no effort to draw the Emirati side’s attention to, and to warn it against, the dire consequences that could result from its regrettable and unjustified conduct.”

The ministry said Abu Dhabi had continued with actions that Algeria considered beyond the limits of what it could accept. Its statement indicated that Algerian officials had issued warnings over an extended period before deciding to cut formal ties.

The UAE expressed regret at Algeria’s decision. Its foreign ministry said it hoped the separation would be temporary and that the two countries could preserve their “fraternal ties”.

Long-running regional disagreements

The dispute did not emerge suddenly. Algeria and the UAE have differed sharply over diplomacy and security across North Africa, the Sahel and the wider Arab world. Algerian leaders have repeatedly voiced concern about what they see as Emirati involvement in regional affairs, arguing that such activity conflicts with Algeria’s approach to sovereignty and security.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been particularly outspoken in his criticism. He has previously called the UAE a “micro-state” that he believes seeks to destabilise countries in the region. His comments have referred specifically to Libya, Mali and Sudan, all countries affected by political instability and conflict in recent years.

During a televised interview in July, Tebboune delivered one of his strongest public attacks on Abu Dhabi’s regional role.

“Wherever they set foot, blood flows.”

He said Algeria wanted the UAE to keep its distance to prevent instability from reaching Algerian territory.

“We want them to stay away, so that blood does not flow in our country.”

Tebboune also said that Algeria had delayed a full diplomatic break in an effort to avoid worsening divisions among Arab states. That position suggests the latest move followed a calculation that continued engagement was no longer producing results.

What the airspace restriction means

The closure applies to both civilian and military aircraft registered in the UAE, giving the diplomatic dispute an immediate practical dimension. Airspace restrictions can affect flight planning, route choices and aviation operations, particularly when aircraft must avoid a large country in North Africa.

The decision to maintain a limited exemption for commercial flights linked to Algiers airport indicates that Algeria is allowing a defined period for passenger services to continue. The exception lasts until the final day of 2026, while the broader ban takes effect on Friday.

Military aviation is also covered by the restriction, underscoring the security dimension of Algeria’s concerns. The measure follows official language that framed the UAE’s actions not merely as a political disagreement but as conduct Algeria views as harmful to its interests.

Differences over foreign policy

One source of division has been the two countries’ contrasting diplomatic choices. Algeria has objected to policies it sees as outside its principles, including the UAE’s 2020 normalisation of relations with Israel. That decision highlighted a wider gap between Algiers and Abu Dhabi over regional engagement.

Algeria has traditionally placed emphasis on non-interference and has viewed developments in neighbouring North African and Sahelian countries through the lens of its own national security. Its concerns over outside influence in those areas have become central to the deterioration of ties with the UAE.

The formal break means that the disagreement has now moved beyond public criticism and competing foreign-policy positions. With an ambassador ordered to depart and aviation access curtailed, the dispute has become a concrete test of whether either side is prepared to seek a path back to diplomatic contact.

For now, Algeria’s message is that previous warnings were insufficient to change what it regarded as unacceptable behaviour. The UAE, while expressing disappointment, has left open the possibility that the relationship could eventually be repaired. Whether that happens will depend on whether the underlying disputes over regional policy and security can be addressed.
