“To reverse damage to our ecosystems before it’s too late, we need to unlock positive tipping points where progress builds on itself, costs fall with scale and recovery becomes self-propelling,” says Professor Tim Lenton, chair in climate change and earth system science at the University of Exeter.

Clean electricity remains the foundation

Solar and wind power have already passed such a threshold in many markets. Their expansion is crucial because affordable low-carbon electricity enables other changes at the same time, from electric transport and heat pumps to cleaner factories and improved air quality.

In the European Union, wind and solar supplied a record 30 per cent of electricity last year, surpassing fossil-fuel generation for the first time. Solar output reached 369TWh, an increase of 20 per cent from 2025. By 2030, solar energy alone is projected to cut EU emissions by 154 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent annually, roughly equal to the Netherlands’ total greenhouse-gas emissions in 2023.

“Because clean power unlocks electric mobility, heat pumps, clean industry and clean air simultaneously, this is the highest-leverage transition across all five Earthshots,” the report says.

The obstacles are increasingly practical rather than technological: electricity grids must expand, planning and permitting rules need to move faster, and clean-energy finance must reach countries where investment remains scarce.

Africa illustrates both the scale of the opportunity and the financing gap. The continent holds 60 per cent of the world’s strongest solar resources but attracts less than two per cent of global investment in clean energy. Several major economies are working to build domestic manufacturing capacity for solar equipment, reducing reliance on Chinese imports that dominate the global market.

Morocco has doubled solar manufacturing production to about one gigawatt a year. South Africa has comparable capacity, while gigawatt-scale projects are coming online in Egypt. The shift reflects a growing recognition that renewable energy can support industrial development as well as climate goals.

“A few years ago, local solar manufacturing was barely on the agenda anywhere in Africa,” Benjamin Clarke, policy director at the Africa Solar Industry Association, tells news agency AP. “It is now becoming a recognised pillar of industrial policy and green economic development.”

Cleaner cooking can improve health and climate outcomes

The energy transition also reaches into homes. Around 2.1 billion people still cook using solid fuels, a practice linked to indoor air pollution and substantial emissions of black carbon, commonly called soot. Replacing these fuels can reduce health risks while lowering a powerful source of climate pollution.

Pay-as-you-go solar systems and clean-cooking companies are expanding in East and Southern Africa, bringing several markets close to a positive tipping point. In Latin America and parts of Asia, the transition to liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, is already substantially complete, delivering health benefits to millions of people.

For households, the value of this change is immediate: less smoke indoors, reduced time spent finding fuel and potentially more reliable access to energy. For policymakers, it shows how climate action can succeed when it addresses everyday needs as well as global emissions targets.

Ocean protection can rebuild ecosystems

Marine conservation is another area where progress can compound. Properly designed and enforced protected areas have produced visible improvements in fish populations and biodiversity in recent years. When coastal communities experience those benefits, support for additional protection can grow, helping conservation efforts spread.

Greater protection can also strengthen food security for people living near the sea and improve resilience to climate impacts. The task is to identify policies and investments that make sustainable choices easier, more affordable and widely available before climate damage crosses further critical thresholds.

Environmental recovery will not happen automatically. It requires effective public policy, investment, infrastructure and enforcement. Still, the evidence from renewable electricity, cleaner cooking and ocean conservation suggests that rapid gains are possible when solutions become embedded in economies and communities.
