How the Tablet Works

Wegovy contains the same active ingredient — semaglutide — already familiar to millions of patients who use the injectable version of the drug. The molecule mimics a naturally occurring gut hormone that signals satiety to the brain, thereby reducing appetite and caloric intake. By delivering the compound orally rather than subcutaneously, Novo Nordisk aims to capture patients who prefer a daily pill over a weekly injection, while still offering a prescription-only option for managing obesity.

The tablet is authorised exclusively for adults. Its injectable counterpart, by contrast, has already received approval for adolescents aged 12 and older, giving clinicians a broader paediatric toolkit in that format.

What the Clinical Data Show

The pivotal trial underpinning EU authorisation was the OASIS-4 study, conducted by an international research consortium. In that trial, 205 overweight adults received semaglutide tablets while 102 participants were assigned a placebo. Over the 64-week treatment window, the drug group shed an average of approximately 13.6 per cent of body weight.

For comparison, the injectable formulation produced a larger mean reduction of around 19 per cent. However, that figure came from a study with a 72-week intervention period — two months longer than the tablet trial — so the two percentages are not directly comparable without accounting for the difference in duration.

Pricing and Practical Considerations

A company spokeswoman indicated that the expected pharmacy retail price in Germany will fall between 170 and 280 euros per month, depending on dosage strength and pharmacy pricing structures. At that level, the tablet will represent a significant ongoing out-of-pocket or insurance-billed expense for patients, a factor that may influence uptake alongside clinical efficacy.

Dosing logistics differ markedly from the injection. The oral tablet must be swallowed every day, ideally on an empty stomach with specific food-and-fluid restrictions to ensure adequate absorption. The injectable version requires only a single subcutaneous dose per week. Both formulations, however, carry the expectation that pharmacotherapy be paired with structured dietary modification and regular physical activity.

Side-Effect Profile

As with the injection, the oral semaglutide carries gastrointestinal risks. A substantial proportion of patients report nausea and diarrhoea during treatment. More rarely, the drug can provoke pancreatitis — inflammation of the pancreas — which warrants prompt medical attention. Clinicians monitoring patients on either formulation are advised to watch for persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, or other signs of pancreatic irritation.

Expert Perspective: Building Blocks, Not Miracle Cures

Julia Szendrödi, president of the German Diabetes Association, cautioned against framing obesity medications as standalone solutions.

“Whether injection or tablet: medicines to treat obesity are not miracle cures for optimising weight, but building blocks in the treatment of a chronic disease.”

Szendrödi emphasised that Wegovy and similar agents must sit within a comprehensive treatment plan that includes nutritional counselling, behavioural support, and exercise. She went further, arguing that the pharmaceutical approach cannot substitute for upstream public-health measures. In her view, what Germany and other European nations need are clearer nutrition labelling on packaged foods, enforceable quality standards for school meals, and tighter restrictions on advertising unhealthy products to children.

A Fiercely Contested Global Market

The commercial stakes surrounding weight-loss drugs are enormous. Analysts cited by Handelsblatt project that the global obesity-pharmaceutical market could generate roughly 100 billion dollars in annual revenue for drugmakers by 2030. Multiple products are now entering or already occupying that space. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the oral GLP-1 pill “Foundayo” from US-based Eli Lilly is scheduled to reach pharmacy shelves from the end of August, weeks before Wegovy’s German debut.

The competitive landscape means patients in several European markets will soon have choices among at least two oral semaglutide or tirzepatide-class tablets, alongside established injectables. Pricing pressure, insurance-coverage decisions, and real-world tolerability data will shape which products gain traction in each country.

Who Qualifies for Treatment

Weight-loss medicines of this class are indicated primarily for adults with obesity, defined as a body-mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. They may also be prescribed below that threshold when excess weight contributes to comorbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus or obstructive sleep apnoea. In those cases, clinicians weigh the metabolic and respiratory benefits of modest weight reduction against the drug’s cost and side-effect burden.
