Greece, Spain and Italy drive surge in summer 2026 travel demand

Poinews.com – As summer 2026 approaches, Southern Europe is emerging as a key destination hub, with Greece, Spain, and Italy showing the most significant rise in international travel intent. The Data Appeal Company/Almaviva Group reports that the region will account for 11.71% of global travel demand from June to August, marking a 2.47 percentage point increase compared to the same period in 2025. This shift is driven by travelers prioritizing “closer, more familiar” locations amid geopolitical tensions, flight route changes, and higher airline costs.
Mediterranean Appeal and Accessibility
The Mediterranean’s surge in popularity aligns with broader changes in international travel trends. While Asian destinations still dominate overall travel intent, uncertainty in the Middle East has pushed many to seek destinations perceived as easier to reach. “As air routes and flight corridors face disruptions due to rerouting, increased expenses, and geopolitical unpredictability, long-haul demand is naturally shifting toward more accessible locations,” said Carlos Cendra, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Data Appeal.
Key Destinations in Southern Europe
Within Southern Europe, Athens leads with a 0.23 percentage point year-on-year rise, capturing 0.77% of global travel intent. The Greek capital’s appeal stems from its role as both a city-break hotspot and a gateway to its islands. Barcelona remains the most searched destination in the region, accounting for 1.01% of global intent, while Madrid, Rome, and Milan also see notable growth. Researchers highlight strong air connectivity and the enduring appeal of Mediterranean beach vacations as factors behind this trend.
Asia’s Continued Dominance
Asia remains the largest travel market, with Eastern Asia representing 14.41% and Southeastern Asia capturing 13.58% of global intent. The report notes that over a quarter of international travelers will choose destinations in these regions during the summer. However, demand in Eastern Asia has declined significantly compared to 2025, while Western Asia saw the steepest drop, losing 2.69 percentage points of market share. Despite this, countries like Türkiye, Cyprus, and Georgia continue to attract visitors through regional interest.
Global Trends and Emerging Markets
North America also reports a strong summer season, with the region representing 8.36% of global travel intent—an increase of 1.01 percentage points. Analysts credit this growth to heightened interest from international travelers, particularly due to the FIFA World Cup. Gateway cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Orlando benefit from this surge. Meanwhile, Canadian cities like Vancouver and Calgary show rising popularity.
Latin America and Northern Europe
Latin America and the Caribbean experience robust growth, with Peru, Brazil, and Mexico leading the increase. Africa sees modest gains, while Northern Europe capitalizes on the “coolcation” trend, capturing 5.96% of global intent. Cities like London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Copenhagen, and Iceland draw travelers seeking milder weather and alternatives to the Mediterranean heat.
“This means that more than one in four international travellers will choose destinations in these two regions during summer 2026,” the report said.
