EU-US Trade Agreement Passes Despite Ongoing US Tariff Threats

The agreement’s implementation hinges on the EU’s removal of tariffs on most American industrial products, while European nations agree to apply a 15 percent tax on goods sent to the United States. The vote saw 440 MEPs in favor, 151 opposed, and 50 abstentions, marking a decisive endorsement of the deal despite recent tensions.
Trump’s Tariff Threats Prompted Final Approval
As the final vote approached, Trump issued a warning on Monday about imposing tariffs on French wine and champagne, contingent on Paris eliminating its digital levy on US technology companies. Despite these pressures, EU lawmakers proceeded with their endorsement, indicating the trade agreement remained a priority. The compromise allows the EU to ease import duties on US goods, while Europeans commit to paying tariffs on exports, a balance the Commission insists was necessary.
“We said, and we still believe, this is not what it should be,” remarked Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, representing the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group, before the vote. “The Commission would not have concluded such a deal without security considerations, particularly maintaining US backing for Ukraine.”
The EU executive pushed for rapid implementation, fearing the US might withdraw from its commitments if the EU delayed. However, the Parliament had paused the process earlier this year after Trump threatened tariffs on EU nations over his desire to acquire Greenland. This delay reflected broader concerns about the US using trade measures as leverage in political disputes.
Security Concerns and Legislative Compromises
During May negotiations, MEPs made concessions to secure the agreement, including a “sunset clause” that will automatically terminate the trade deal on 31 March 2029 unless renewed. Additionally, the EU secured a provision permitting the Commission to suspend the agreement at the request of either the Parliament or a member state if the US fails to lift tariffs on European steel and aluminium by the end of 2026.
Recent US tariff threats, such as those targeting forced labor and EU cars, underscore the ongoing nature of the dispute. Trump’s warnings over wine and champagne highlight his continued use of tariffs as a tool to pressure European partners. While the deal was approved, lawmakers remain cautious, emphasizing the need for safeguards against future US demands.
