Why travel has become one of the best ways to make new friends

Poinews.com – Beyond the breathtaking landscapes and cultural encounters, the true essence of a memorable journey often lies in the connections forged with strangers along the way. A recent study by travel platform WeRoad reveals that nearly half of Europeans view travel as the most effective method for initiating meaningful personal relationships.

The Impact of Travel on Social Bonds

The research, which surveyed 5,000 individuals across Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, highlights how time spent away from routine fosters openness to new experiences. Participants noted that the freedom associated with travel plays a key role in encouraging these interactions.

“When WeRoad asked the European survey participants what it is that makes relationships formed while travelling different, the answers were varied, but all positive.”

Why Travelers Connect More Deeply

Over 60% of respondents emphasized that shared experiences are central to the uniqueness of friendships made during trips. Another 43% attributed these bonds to the way travel allows entire days to be dedicated to interaction. Meanwhile, 30% credited the break from daily life, while 19% highlighted the absence of pressure to meet expectations.

Modern Challenges in Building Relationships

Despite our increasingly digital world, 72% of participants expressed a strong desire for in-person connections. Only 9% relied on dating apps or social networks for socializing, underscoring a shift toward seeking authentic interactions offline. The study also found that 66% believe forming new relationships is more complex today, with 84% stating it’s harder than ever to create genuine bonds.

A Growing Need for Human Connection

More than half of the surveyed Europeans admitted to feeling unfulfilled in their social lives. Common reasons included a lack of time (33%), hesitation to take the first step (25%), and social anxiety (21%). Additionally, 20% reported persistent loneliness, regardless of whether they lived in bustling cities or quiet rural areas.

Travel acts as a leveler, offering opportunities to bond over shared moments and breaking down barriers of background or status. This dynamic seems to resonate deeply, as 66% of participants confirmed they’ve formed lasting friendships through their journeys.
