Z.ai asserts that GLM 5.2 matches the capabilities of Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.5. The model operates with a context window of up to 1 million tokens, enabling it to process around 750,000 words simultaneously. This feature is particularly useful for handling extensive coding tasks, as the company highlights its ability to maintain consistent quality throughout long and complex development processes.
“GLM-5.2 is designed to run long coding tasks and ensures ‘quality across long, messy coding-agent trajectories,’” Z.ai noted in its announcement.
Benchmark Results and Competitive Edge
GLM 5.2 was evaluated across three distinct benchmarks for extended coding projects. On open-ended technical challenges lasting hours to days, it slightly lags behind Opus 4.8 by 1% but outperforms GPT-5.5 and Opus 4.7. When tested for optimizing smaller models using a single GPU, it surpassed both GPT-5.5 and Opus 4.7, securing a second-place finish. In the most demanding test—marathon-length engineering tasks like compiler development—it still trails Opus 4.8 by 13%, though it remains the top open-source model overall.
Open Source vs. Closed Source Models
Unlike Anthropic and OpenAI, which rely on proprietary systems, GLM 5.2 is open source. This means users can customize the model for any application, alter its outputs, and redistribute it freely. “The AI system can be modified for any purpose, including changing its output and sharing it with or without modifications,” the company emphasized. This flexibility contrasts sharply with closed-source models, where users depend entirely on the provider for updates and adjustments.
The U.S. and China are locked in a fierce AI race, each pursuing distinct strategies to dominate the field. While the U.S. focuses on restricting semiconductor access to slow competitors, China emphasizes affordability and accessibility through open-source models. This approach was exemplified by DeepSeek’s release of R1 in January 2025, which offered a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to American counterparts.
