Energy storage challenges in the EU

A new tripartite agreement
On June 26, EU energy ministers finalized the first tripartite pact on energy storage, uniting member states, industry leaders, and financial bodies. Twenty-two nations have pledged to install 30–35 gigawatts of new storage capacity by 2028. This effort contributes to the EU’s broader goal of achieving 200 gigawatts of storage by 2030, up from approximately 55 gigawatts currently.
The pact aims to accelerate investments in battery storage, pumped hydropower, thermal solutions, and other technologies that can capture surplus renewable energy for later use. Member states also agreed to streamline regulations, enhance planning processes, and leverage both public and private funding sources.
What’s at stake?
While these pledges are voluntary, the EU anticipates that the initiative will help minimize energy waste, bolster energy independence, stabilize pricing, and advance the shift from fossil fuels. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains a topic of debate.
