Escalating Military Posture

These comments emerged while US Central Command logged ten straight days of bombardments targeting Iranian positions. President Donald Trump is anticipated to announce his course of action within the next few days, with discussions now openly addressing the possibility of American troops seizing Iranian land or conducting a ground campaign.

According to the Washington Post, Pentagon planners are developing scenarios for limited ground operations that would not constitute a complete invasion. Such efforts could deploy thousands of soldiers and extend over several weeks or months, the newspaper reported based on anonymous American officials.

White House representatives clarified that military leaders are ensuring the president retains “maximum optionality,” though they stressed no final determination has been reached yet.

Regional Threats and Counter-Threats

Manouchehr Mottaki, a former foreign minister currently serving in parliament, urged Tehran to expand beyond attacking American bases throughout the region. He suggested capturing US personnel as a strategic response.

“The US threats have intensified, and it has said that it will seize Kharg Island and take control of Iran’s oil facilities,” Mottaki explained. “I have been advocating for a ground war for a long time. We should seize one of the US bases in the region, capture its forces, and bring them back to our country.”

Another parliamentarian, Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani, who previously chaired the National Security Commission, indicated that Tehran might initiate ground assaults against Kuwait and Bahrain should Washington invade Iranian soil. Regarding Kharg Island specifically, he argued that while the United States could potentially capture it temporarily, sustained control would prove difficult.

“Iranian missiles from Semnan, Zahedan, Isfahan and elsewhere can reach it. Occupying Kharg Island would turn it into a target for Iran,” Ardestani stated.

Kuwait Under Scrutiny

Attention has increasingly focused on potential Iranian actions against Kuwait, particularly Bubiyan Island. Spanning 863 square kilometers, this territory represents Kuwait’s largest landmass and occupies a strategic position at the northern Persian Gulf near Iraq.

Various Iranian political voices and social media platforms have explored scenarios where the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps might respond to a US move on Kharg by launching a ground offensive through southern Iraq. The Saberin special forces unit, an elite formation with considerable combat experience across Iran and neighboring nations, could play a central role in such operations.

Online reports have mentioned Iranian military movements toward the Kuwaiti frontier, though independent verification remains unavailable. Kuwait, which hosts American troops, has experienced some of the heaviest Iranian bombardment in recent weeks.

Earlier incidents in March and May reportedly involved IRGC commandos targeting Bubiyan and clashing with Kuwaiti defenders. On May 1, six IRGC soldiers arrived on Bubiyan Island aboard a rented fishing vessel before being intercepted by Kuwaiti security personnel. Four individuals were taken into custody while two fled following a gunfight that injured one Kuwaiti soldier, according to local authorities.

Kuwait’s Interior Ministry reported that the detained men admitted to being IRGC members conducting “hostile acts.” Conversely, Iran’s foreign ministry dismissed these claims, asserting the four officers had crossed into Kuwaiti waters because of a navigation equipment malfunction.

Casualties and Ongoing Tensions

President Trump announced in mid-March that aerial strikes had “obliterated” Kharg’s military capabilities while intentionally leaving oil infrastructure intact. He cautioned that continued Iranian disruption of Hormuz shipping could prompt him to reverse that decision.

“Every time Iran kills an American soldier, they will pay for that killing many times over,” Trump wrote on Truth Social following this week’s Iranian strikes that resulted in US troop fatalities.

US military data indicates that fifteen American service members have lost their lives in the conflict since hostilities commenced in late February.
