World Cup Boosts Chinese Tourists to Spain for Golden Week
Poinews.com – The World Cup boosts Chinese tourists interest in Spain following the nation’s recent championship victory, creating a significant economic opportunity. According to a 2024 study by Aberdeen University published in the Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, World Cup victories generate approximately four billion euros for the champion country’s economy. This figure represents a minimum 0.48 percent GDP expansion across the two quarters after the final match. Applied to Spain’s 1.69 trillion euro economy, the World Cup boosts Chinese tourists’ interest translates into substantial additional growth before the effect gradually fades.
Flight Search Surge Following Victory
Chinese travelers are showing remarkable enthusiasm for Spanish destinations. Travel platform Qunar, working with Spanish firm Stamp, documented extraordinary increases in flight searches. Within hours of La Roja’s triumph, queries for Shenzhen to Barcelona routes multiplied thirty-three times. Tenerife interest grew nineteen-fold, while Malaga searches jumped 10.5 times. This surge demonstrates how the World Cup boosts Chinese tourists’ travel plans toward Spain.
These trends build upon existing momentum between the two nations. Aena’s official statistics show air travel between Spain and China reached 707,530 passengers in the first half of 2026, marking a 46.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. Additional flight routes and growing visitor numbers from Chengdu and Guangzhou have strengthened this connection, with the World Cup victory providing additional acceleration to this positive trajectory.
Preparing for Golden Week Shoppers
As Golden Week approaches from October 1 through October 8, Stamp has published detailed recommendations for Spanish merchants. The guide reveals that nearly 78 percent of Chinese visitors plan their shopping before departure, relying heavily on digital platforms such as Xiaohongshu, Weibo, and WeChat. This digital-first approach means maintaining strong online visibility is crucial for capturing this market segment.
Payment solutions represent another critical consideration. Alipay and WeChat Pay handle more than 90 percent of transactions made by Chinese tourists abroad. The Stamp guide recommends simplifying the value-added tax refund process to minimize friction for international shoppers seeking to maximize their purchasing power.
“Today’s Chinese tourist does not have Tax Free, he has Tax Refund: he pays the full VAT at the till and, weeks later, if everything goes well, gets part of it back,” explains Abel Navajas, co-founder and chief executive of Stamp.
Navajas proposes that offering immediate discounts at checkout rather than delayed reimbursement could significantly improve Spanish retailers’ ability to benefit from the World Cup boosts Chinese tourists’ spending during this important travel period.
