‘The Blair Witch Project’ Reboot Set for 2027 Theatrical Release

Lionsgate and Atomic Monster have confirmed the production of a reboot, aiming to revive the 1999 found-footage horror classic. The studios shared the release date via a cryptic Instagram clip, featuring the numbers “9 24 27” crafted from twigs and a vintage stick figure from the original.
A New Vision for a Horror Legacy
Dylan Clark, whose career began on YouTube, will direct the upcoming project. Chris Thomas Devlin penned the script, while the original creators—Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale—will serve as executive producers. Notably, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, stars of the 1999 film, are also involved in the remake.
“A new vision that will reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, hinting at the film’s intent to resonate with modern audiences. The reboot follows the trail of previous attempts to expand the Blair Witch universe, including the 2000 sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and the 2016 follow-up Blair Witch, both of which struggled at the box office despite critical praise.
The Original’s Lasting Impact
Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project was a groundbreaking found-footage horror film. It originated from a modest budget of $35,000 and transformed into a global phenomenon, grossing nearly $250 million worldwide. The movie’s success helped popularize the subgenre, 19 years after Cannibal Holocaust introduced the concept.
“It really got under my skin,” acclaimed horror author Stephen King remarked in the documentary Chain Reactions, acknowledging the film’s lingering effect on viewers.
The original’s promotional strategy, which masqueraded it as a real documentary, played a key role in its viral success. Fans and critics alike were captivated by its eerie atmosphere and the trio of college students who disappeared in the woods, allegedly investigating the Blair Witch legend.
