Diplomatic Tensions Escalate Over EU-Israel Relations
Poinews.com – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has called for a more balanced approach in discussions with the European Union, criticizing the notion of one-sided negotiations. His remarks come after a recent disagreement involving EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, whose comments on Israel’s treatment of Palestinians reportedly sparked backlash. Sa’ar emphasized the need for comprehensive and transparent communication between the two sides, highlighting the significance of mutual respect in their relationship.
“We believe in the importance of comprehensive, honest, and open dialogue with the EU,” Sa’ar stated. “But dialogue cannot just be one side dictating its political positions to the other. Certainly not when it comes to issues at the very heart of our existence.”
EU’s Proposed Measures Against Settlement Trade
While Sa’ar focused on dialogue, the European Union is also preparing to outline potential steps to limit trade with Israeli settlements. This follows increased pressure from member states during a recent meeting in Brussels. The Commission aims to address the issue of settlements, which are recognized as illegal under international law, though the proposed options paper remains pending due to unresolved disagreements.
Šuica’s Visit Reflects Regional Engagement
European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica concluded a two-day trip to Israel and the occupied West Bank in Jerusalem on Monday. During the visit, she reiterated that partnerships require candid and open communication. However, a European diplomat noted that Šuica’s presence alongside Sa’ar without addressing Kallas’s alleged remarks about apartheid-like conditions created a perceived inconsistency.
Commission Spokespersons Reaffirm Commitment to Engagement
The European Commission’s spokesperson service clarified that Šuica’s visit was part of a planned tour across the Middle East. “We will continue saying this respectful and constructive dialogue and engagement is important with all our partners, even more so when there are differences,” added Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert. The EEAS was aware of the meeting, which was described as “long-planned” by chief spokesperson Paula Pinho.
Upcoming Meetings Highlight Regional Focus
Šuica is set to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem to explore bilateral ties and the Gaza situation. In Ramallah, she will engage with Palestinian Vice-President Hussein Al Sheikh and Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa to discuss ongoing EU support and other regional concerns. These meetings underscore the EU’s efforts to maintain diplomatic ties despite internal tensions.
