Saunasaari: A Sauna Island Unveiled in Helsinki’s Heart

Poinews.com – In the heart of Helsinki, Finland, a new destination has emerged for those seeking to immerse themselves in the nation’s iconic sauna culture. Saunasaari, officially open on 26 June 2026, is an island entirely devoted to the ritual of sauna bathing, offering visitors a unique blend of traditional relaxation and modern convenience.

The island boasts a variety of sauna options, with a standout feature being its large traditional smoke sauna. This is the only one of its kind in Helsinki, providing a distinctive experience rooted in Finnish heritage. Complementing the saunas are two wood-fired hot tubs, known as “palju,” strategically placed near the water’s edge for panoramic views of the city.

Combining Tradition with Nature

Saunasaari’s design allows guests to seamlessly transition between the warmth of the saunas and the refreshing chill of the Baltic Sea. The location is ideal for those wishing to pair their sauna sessions with a quick dip in the sea, enhancing the therapeutic experience with natural elements.

“The Finnish archipelago, traditional smoke sauna, open-fire cooking, and genuine hospitality are all deeply rooted in our identity,” said Nina Stenros, co-creator of Saunasaari with Riku Stenros. “We wanted to create an experience where visitors can step into that world without leaving Helsinki.”

For a more immersive journey, Saunasaari provides a special package combining sauna access with a gourmet dining experience. This offering is available every Friday and Saturday evening until 8 August, featuring a char-grilled menu prepared at the summer kitchen RÖK. Highlights include whole smoked fish, open-fire grilled beef entrecôte, and vegetarian options like summer cabbage.

Access and Events

The island is reachable via a short water taxi ride from Helsinki’s Market Square, making it a convenient yet secluded retreat. Beyond its public amenities, Saunasaari is also available for private events, catering to those looking to host gatherings in a serene, culturally rich setting.
