Ukraine says Starlink connection is stable again after concerns over military access

Poinews.com – Ukraine says its forces have regained a reliable connection to SpaceX’s Starlink network after recent concerns that limitations on the service were affecting military operations. The restoration matters directly to troops on the front line, where satellite connectivity supports drone activity, communications and the movement of supplies.

Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara said on Saturday that Ukrainian monitoring systems had detected a clear improvement in Starlink and Starshield performance. Starshield is the military-focused version of the satellite internet system.

“Monitoring systems are recording a recovery in the speed of Starlink/Starshield. We are registering a speed of more than 400 km/h, the connection is stable,” Khmara said.

He said the renewed connection has immediate operational importance for Ukraine’s armed forces. Battlefield units rely on resilient communications where conventional internet and mobile networks may be unavailable, damaged or vulnerable to disruption.

“This result is above all important for our front, for our soldiers, for the operation of drones, for logistics and for communications,” he added.

Satellite access remains vital on the battlefield

Starlink and Starshield have become important elements of Ukraine’s communications infrastructure during Russia’s full-scale invasion. The systems can provide internet access through satellite terminals, helping maintain links between military units across areas where fighting has damaged infrastructure or made ground-based networks unreliable.

For Ukraine, dependable satellite connectivity can influence several parts of military activity at once. Drone teams need communications and data links during operations, commanders need channels to coordinate personnel and equipment, and logistics units need to keep track of movements and deliveries. The service is therefore more than a consumer internet tool; it has become part of the wider communications environment supporting Ukraine’s defence.

Its role has also placed Starlink at the heart of broader tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Ukrainian personnel had recently raised concerns about restrictions on military use of the network, prompting worries that missions could be interrupted without advance notice.

Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on military technology, said last week that SpaceX had imposed an overnight speed limit. He said Ukraine’s defence forces had not been warned before the limitation took effect.

“Our defence forces did not receive a warning about this limitation and this led to the disruption of several missions,” Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram.

US President Donald Trump said this week that he would speak with Elon Musk if Starlink access had not been restored. The comments underscored how strategically significant the service has become for Ukraine and how access to communications technologies can affect the conduct of the war.

Intelligence sharing and air-raid warning concerns

Zelenskyy also addressed concerns surrounding US intelligence sharing during a press conference with Nordic leaders on Tuesday. He said he was grateful that intelligence cooperation was functioning, stressing the importance of early warning for civilians living under the threat of missile attacks.

“I’m speaking about early warning, what is very important for our people, for children, adults, civilians, because we can hear when ballistic is coming,” Zelenskyy said.

Early-warning information is particularly significant during strikes involving ballistic missiles, when the time available to reach shelter can be limited. Ukraine has repeatedly highlighted the need for air-defence systems, intelligence support and reliable warning mechanisms as Russian attacks continue to target locations across the country.

Deadly strikes in Donetsk region

The renewed focus on military communications came as authorities in eastern Ukraine announced fresh civilian casualties from Russian attacks. Two people were killed and 18 others injured in the Donetsk region over the previous 24 hours.

Regional governor Vadym Filashkin said the deaths occurred on 23 October in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, two cities in the Donetsk Oblast that remain exposed to the consequences of the fighting.

“On 23 October, the Russians killed two residents of Donetsk Oblast: in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk,” Filashkin said on Saturday morning. “A further 18 people in the region were injured over the past 24 hours.”

Donetsk remains one of the most heavily contested parts of Ukraine. Attacks there affect both military positions and populated areas, placing additional pressure on local emergency services and residents who continue to face regular air-raid alerts and strikes.

Ukraine cites strikes on Russian military-linked sites

Ukraine also said its forces carried out retaliatory strikes on Friday and overnight against targets inside Russia. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine named the Tolyattikauchuk chemical plant, a Proton-Electrotex building in Oryol, and an aircraft at the Yeysk air base in Krasnodar Krai.

The General Staff said the attacks on the chemical facility and the Proton-Electrotex building were intended to interfere with supply chains and manufacturing processes connected to Russian missile production. The claimed strikes reflect Ukraine’s continuing effort to hit sites it sees as supporting Russia’s military capabilities beyond the immediate front line.

As fighting and long-range attacks continue, Kyiv’s announcement on Starlink points to the practical importance of communications resilience. Stable access can shape how quickly units share information, operate drones, coordinate logistics and respond to developments across a long and active battlefield.
