Poinews.com – Amid Europe’s sweltering heatwave, Berlin Zoo has introduced measures to help its animals beat the rising temperatures. Zookeepers are providing brown bears with large, icy treats packed with fish, fruits, and vegetables, while elephants are enjoying water sprays and showers to stay refreshed.

Heatwave prompts creative cooling strategies

The zoo’s efforts align with a trend of extreme heat affecting much of the continent, where meteorologists predict temperatures could climb even higher over the weekend. To engage the bears, staff are tossing frozen blocks—dubbed “ice bombs”—into their enclosures, enticing them to interact with water and uncover hidden food inside the ice.

“These treats keep the bears active and offer a welcome escape from the heat,” said zoo spokesperson Hanja Runge.

Meanwhile, elephants are gathering near hosepipes, splashing water on themselves and drinking to cool down. Despite their natural habitats in Africa and Asia, these giants still require access to shade, mud, and hydration to manage their body temperature during intense heat.

Berlin Zoo routinely adjusts care routines during warm periods, but the current situation has intensified the focus on activities that reduce heat stress. From misting systems to enriched environments, the facility is ensuring animals remain comfortable and stimulated throughout the summer.
