Judo: Japan Dominates Day One in Ulaanbaatar
Poinews.com – Judo – The IJF World Tour returned to the Steppe Arena in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on June 19, 2026, as the event kicked off with LA Olympic qualification points on the line. The arena buzzed with energy as some of the world’s top judo athletes competed in the opening day of the tournament.
-48 kg Final
In the -48kg division, KOGA Wakana faced ZHUANG Wenna in the championship match. A decisive ouchi-gari for yuko sealed the victory for the Japanese athlete, marking a narrow triumph in a closely contested bout.
-60 kg Championship
The -60kg class delivered a high-level competition, featuring World number one Balabay AGHAYEV and reigning world champion NAGAYAMA Ryuju. AGHAYEV emerged victorious with a yuko score, securing the gold medal in a thrilling showdown.
-52 kg Triumph
Olympic and five-time World champion ABE Uta showcased her dominance, making quick work of all opponents on her path to the final. Her win marked a historic achievement, as she claimed her 12th Grand Slam gold—a record for female athletes in the sport.
-66 kg Victory
Current -66kg world champion TAKEOKA Takeshi displayed exceptional form throughout the day. In the final, a strong waza-ari helped him defeat Ramazan ABDULAEV, adding to Japan’s tally of medals.
-57 kg Highlight
OMORI Akari impressed with a strategic sacrifice technique in the -57kg final, overcoming Sarah Leonie CYSIQUE to secure a fourth title for Japan on the day. The gold was presented by Referee Supervisor of the International Judo Federation, Mr Mathieu BATAILLE.
Sukhbat BYAMBASUREN brought home a bronze medal for the host nation, providing a moment of pride for Mongolian fans. The event’s organizers remain optimistic for the upcoming middle-weights category, where more standout performances are expected.
Medals were presented by several officials, including Mr Mohammed MERIDJA of the International Judo Federation, who awarded the -48kg title. Vice President Mr Turbold BOLDBAATAR and Chair Mr Bilegt ERDENESAIKHAN also played key roles in honoring the athletes.
