On June 22, France activated red alerts for over half of its 96 mainland departments, advising residents to maintain “absolute vigilance” and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. The sweltering conditions have seen temperatures surpass 40℃, compounded by an unusual number of tropical nights—periods where temperatures remain above 20℃ for the entire 24-hour cycle.

Tragic Consequences of the Heatwave

Two young children, aged four and two, were discovered deceased in their family’s vehicle in southeastern France, prompting officials to note that heat was the “leading line of inquiry.” This follows the deaths of three elderly individuals near Bordeaux over the weekend, attributed to health complications from extreme temperatures. Meanwhile, the UK Met Office has issued red extreme heat warnings for central and southern England, as well as Wales, projecting temperatures reaching 39℃ in the coming days. Overnight lows are also expected to stay “very high,” with humidity exacerbating the risk of heat stress.

El Niño’s Role in the Debate

Earlier this month, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific, marking the start of what could be a powerful event in decades. However, this term isn’t an official classification and is not directly used by NOAA. El Niño, meaning “the boy” in Spanish, is a natural phenomenon occurring when sea temperatures in the Eastern Pacific Ocean rise unusually. Such conditions can elevate global temperatures, creating a backdrop for extreme weather patterns.

Previous El Niño events, like the one from May 2023 to March 2024, were linked to record-breaking heat, wildfires, and floods worldwide. Experts at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands caution that El Niño’s effects extend beyond heat, potentially leading to droughts, food shortages, and energy crises. Despite this, many media outlets have connected the current European heatwave to El Niño, a claim that Ioanna Vergini, founder of the WYF24 forecasting platform, disputes.

“The Pacific isn’t in a strong El Niño state now, and even when it is, its direct influence on European summer heat is weak and poorly constrained,” Vergini explains. “This is a classic jet-stream blocking event acting on a record-warm background. The dome is the mechanism; long-term warming is the amplifier; El Niño is a distraction.”

El Niño’s Broader Environmental Impacts

While El Niño’s effects are pronounced in tropical regions, its influence in Europe and the UK is more indirect. It can contribute to erratic weather later in the year, such as milder, wetter, and windier conditions during autumn and early winter. The British Met Office notes that El Niño may also bring colder, calmer weather to the UK in late winter, though these impacts will require further analysis as forecasts develop.

Climate experts predict that by the end of 2026 and into 2027, global temperatures will likely reach unprecedented highs. However, these projections don’t account for the intense heat currently gripping Western Europe. While El Niño typically raises global temperatures by about 0.2℃, human-induced climate change has already driven a rise of 1.3 to 1.5℃ compared to pre-industrial levels. This long-term warming trend, rather than El Niño alone, is the primary factor amplifying the severity of the current heatwave.

Regional Risks Amplified by El Niño

El Niño is associated with increased flooding in South America, such as in northern Peru, and can extend to East Africa, Central Asia, and the southern United States. Droughts and wildfire threats also intensify across Australia, northern South America, and Asian nations like Indonesia. In Europe, though El Niño’s direct effects are limited, it still plays a role in shaping future weather patterns, potentially leading to more unstable conditions in the months ahead.
