‘People admire scars’: MEPs fear Le Pen more than Bardella

Le Pen’s decision to contest the 2027 French presidential election, despite a past fraud conviction, has sparked debate. With Bardella focused on the prime minister’s role, some in France questioned whether transferring leadership entirely would have been wiser. However, lawmakers in Brussels remain confident: Le Pen’s campaign is viewed as more likely to succeed.
Reassurance Over Novelty
“French voters are not looking for an adventure with a young candidate; they want to be reassured,” stated Sandro Gozi of the Democratic Movement. He argued that Le Pen’s ability to tap into public concerns—like war, energy costs, and financial insecurity—gives her an edge over Bardella.
Bardella’s strategy to attract support from France’s upper class may inadvertently distance him from working-class voters. Gozi highlighted this, suggesting that Bardella’s calculated moves, including his romance with Maria Carolina di Borbone delle Due Sicilie—a descendant of the Southern Italian royal family—reflect an effort to align with elite interests.
Economic Priorities
Key economic policies further distinguish Le Pen from Bardella. The National Rally leader advocates for reducing the retirement age to 62, while Bardella promotes taxing energy companies for their record profits. Polls suggest Le Pen’s stance is more widely accepted by the electorate.
Le Pen’s narrative of perseverance, including three unsuccessful presidential runs and a legal fight to secure her 2027 candidacy, has solidified her image as an underdog. This story resonates with many ordinary French citizens, fostering both support and emotional investment in her campaign.
Manon Aubry of France Unbowed described Le Pen as a “tougher opponent in the runoff,” citing her experience and poise in debates. A Renaissance Party source, speaking anonymously, added that Le Pen has refined her approach after past setbacks, including a heated 2017 showdown with Emmanuel Macron. Socialist Brando Benifei echoed this, stating that Le Pen’s appeal transcends generational divides, making her the most dangerous candidate for the National Rally.
