‘Εβίβα!’ Europe’s Top Bar Crowned in Greece

Poinews.com – For the first time, a list of Europe’s 50 Best Bars has been unveiled, marking a new milestone in the continent’s drinking culture. The announcement took place in Amsterdam during a live awards event, with over 300 beverage professionals casting their votes to determine the rankings. While London dominated with seven entries, Barcelona and Paris followed closely with six and five respectively, Athens surprised many by securing two of the top spots.

ATHENS’ DOMINANCE

Two Greek bars, Line and The Bar in Front of the Bar, claimed the first and second positions. The latter’s name, a playful nod to its location, reflects the city’s vibrant bar scene. Additional Athenian spots Barro Negro, Baba au Rum, and The Clumsies ranked at numbers 13, 14, and 30, while Thessaloniki’s Gorilla reached position 33.

From the outside, The Bar in Front of the Bar appears as a modest street-side venue. But stepping inside reveals a sophisticated lounge where innovative cocktails are crafted with local ingredients, blending traditional Greek flair with modern technique.

NOTABLE ENTRIES

Established in 2008, Connaught Bar has long been a fixture on global lists, known for its iconic martini trolley. “This bar epitomizes the pinnacle of luxury hospitality, with its trio of master mixologists delivering timeless classics and bold new twists,” the team noted.

Paradiso, nestled in Barcelona’s bustling streets, offers a whimsical escape with its Gaudi-inspired design. “Hidden behind a pastrami shop’s fridge door, this speakeasy transforms into a cocktail wonderland, curated by the creative minds of Giacomo Giannotti and Margarita Sader,” the venue described.

EUROPE’S VARIETY OF TALENT

The Cambridge, located in Paris’ cultural Marais district, merges British pub traditions with contemporary cocktail artistry. “This hybrid space combines the comfort of a traditional pub with the sophistication of a modern bar, serving perfectly balanced Guinness and inventive drinks,” the team explained.

Meanwhile, a Milanese space blends industrial aesthetics with raw design elements, housing a tapa bistrot, a fine dining counter, and a bar featuring one of Europe’s most impressive drink programs. Bar Nouveau in Paris, a dual-level venue, showcases vintage vermouths and liqueurs, with its signature cocktail being the Pesto Martini.

“A space where history meets innovation, Bar Nouveau’s ambiance is as captivating as its collection of aged spirits,” the bar highlighted. “Its Pesto Martini, despite the name, is a tribute to classic European flavors.”

Himkok, a moody haven in Oslo, is a standout with its home-cooked vibe. “The bar’s name is a metaphor for its approach: every detail is handcrafted, from the ice to the aquavit barrels, ensuring a unique cocktail experience,” the team said.

Previously a top contender, Sips in Barcelona continues to impress. “With its blend of creativity and precision, this bar redefines what it means to be a European gem,” the venue noted. Its signature cocktail, the Primordial, combines 12-year-old Scotch, Ruby Port, and peranashi, served in a striking metal sculpture.
