Types of Infections and Symptoms

Coastal zones with significant river inflows, including the Baltic and Black Seas, show the highest concentrations of the bacteria. The ECDC maintains an interactive map, updated daily, to monitor Vibrio’s spread and provide a five-day forecast for potential outbreaks.

Prevention and Protection

To reduce the risk of infection, the ECDC advises avoiding raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters, and ensuring seafood is fully cooked. When swimming in brackish or saltwater, individuals with open wounds should take precautions to prevent bacterial entry. These measures are crucial in mitigating the impact of Vibrio, which remains relatively rare in Europe but is becoming more common in certain regions.
