Heatwave Sparks Critical Incident at UK Hospital
Poinews.com – As scorching temperatures push healthcare systems to their limits, East Surrey Hospital has activated a critical incident status. This means emergency departments are now focused solely on treating life-threatening conditions, while non-urgent cases are being diverted to alternative care options.
Ed Cetti, the Chief Medical Officer for Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, urged patients to limit hospital visits to emergencies. “Please only attend East Surrey Hospital in a life-threatening situation,” he stated. To manage the surge, individuals are being advised to seek help from pharmacies, general practitioners, or walk-in clinics for less urgent matters.
Heatwave Intensifies Across Europe
The extreme weather is not confined to the UK. Countries such as Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany are also experiencing heightened pressure on medical services. In southwestern France, the Landes department reported a 20% increase in emergency calls on Sunday, according to Sophie Brocas, a local state representative.
“A red heat health alert signals a danger to life for even healthy individuals, but simple steps like staying hydrated, avoiding peak sun hours, and cooling homes can make a significant difference,” said Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Meanwhile, the UKHSA issued a red alert for six English regions, citing Monday’s temperatures that reached 34°C in southern areas. This decision aims to ensure patients receive timely, high-quality care amid the surge in demand. Cetti emphasized the need for swift action to maintain safety standards in the face of rising heat-related health risks.
