Firefighters worked relentlessly to douse the flames, with at least five rescue workers perishing during the operation. In the capital, the cathedral’s roof was engulfed, leaving a gaping hole visible to onlookers. The attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra complex, which includes the cathedral, was condemned as a “direct strike” by local military authorities.
“Five State Emergency Service rescuers were killed during firefighting operations as a result of a repeated Russian strike,” said Interior Minister Igor Klymenko on Telegram.
Regional Impact and Widespread Damage
Across northeast Ukraine, the violence claimed four additional lives in the capital. The fire spread to the grounds of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, with flames visible from the cathedral’s partially damaged roof. Meanwhile, Kharkiv also faced missile strikes, injuring at least nine people. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Dnipro was targeted, leaving one individual wounded. The northeastern district of Sumy reported three casualties, including a child.
A Ukrainian drone strike in the Russian city of Tula, approximately 200 kilometers south of Moscow, killed three and injured three others, according to regional governor Dmitry Milyaev.
Peace Talks and Strategic Shifts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin both reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss the war. Zelenskyy shared on X that “discussions could help bring about peace now,” while his advisor Dmytro Lytvyn praised the “substantive conversation” between the leaders. The Kremlin indicated that the talks focused on peace negotiations involving the United States and Iran.
“US presidential special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, currently engaged in Iranian affairs, will return to Russia soon,” stated Kremlin adviser Yury Ushakov.
Broader Conflict Context
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has escalated into Europe’s most devastating war since World War II, with thousands of civilians and hundreds of thousands of military personnel losing their lives. Despite near-daily assaults by Russian drones and missiles, Ukraine has intensified its own aerial strikes, targeting Russia’s oil infrastructure to weaken its financial support for the conflict. Over 140,000 residents in northern districts have been left without electricity, while at least 23 people in Kyiv were injured during the attacks.
