UK to spend €293.5m over three years to protect Jewish communities

This three-year plan aims to increase police presence in areas with large Jewish populations, including the allocation of 300 officers in London. Additional resources will also focus on enhanced patrols near synagogues and Jewish educational institutions, along with a greater number of plain-clothes personnel.
Leadership Commitment to Combating Antisemitism
Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the funding as a key part of a broader strategy to address antisemitism nationwide. “The rise in antisemitism we’ve seen is a challenge to our national values,” he stated, highlighting the central role of combating hate in his leadership. “This investment marks a significant step in ensuring Jewish communities can thrive without fear.”
“Jewish communities are encountering an elevated level of threat, compounded by hate crimes and global tensions,” noted Matt Jukes, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. He underscored the need for targeted security measures, citing risks from both domestic and international sources.
Recent Attacks and Security Upgrades
Recent events, including a stabbing in Golders Green and arson attacks on Jewish sites, prompted the government to raise the terror threat level to severe. In October of the previous year, a synagogue in Manchester was attacked, resulting in two fatalities. A portion of the funding—£59 million—will specifically support counter-terrorism efforts to reinforce security protocols and enhance responses to external threats.
The initiative follows the establishment of a specialized unit by the Metropolitan Police in May to address the growing number of antisemitic incidents. Starmer also linked the attacks to geopolitical factors, accusing Iran of targeting British Jews and pledging stronger support for the community.
Broader Educational and Preventative Measures
Alongside policing upgrades, the package includes financial backing for educational programs designed to tackle antisemitism and reduce hate crime. These efforts aim to foster understanding and address root causes of prejudice within society.
