The zoo’s newly born anteater, Taio, became the focal point of a unique prediction ritual, offering his first forecast just days before the match. Unlike traditional methods, Taio’s choice was made by selecting the most appealing option from a set of bottles filled with different foods, each representing potential outcomes.
The anteater’s decision surprised many, as he opted for the draw. This choice, signaled by his attraction to mealworms in the bottle, has sparked debate among fans. While the result of Germany’s opening match remains uncertain, Taio’s role as a World Cup oracle has already drawn attention to his species’ conservation status. Born in 2024, he is the first giant anteater to be born at the zoo, a fact highlighted in their social media announcements.

Paul’s flawless predictions, which included all of Germany’s matches and the final, catapulted him into international fame. Even media outlets like The Guardian and Le Monde covered his feats, and his forecast for the semi-final was broadcast live.
Paul’s success, however, has been difficult to replicate. While other animals have attempted to follow in his footsteps, none have matched his accuracy. After Paul’s passing in 2010, his legacy was continued by Paul II, or “little Paul,” who predicted the Women’s World Cup outcomes the following year. In 2014, a separate competition saw octopuses from eight German cities vying to be the next oracle, but none achieved the same level of precision as Paul.

Though Taka correctly predicted the result, the forecast wasn’t shared with the public before the game, leaving the outcome ambiguous. Meanwhile, Octopus Regina from Berlin’s Sea Life was often considered a contender for Paul’s successor. She accurately called Germany’s opening match against Portugal but erred in two group-stage predictions.
With Taio’s debut, the zoo hopes to reignite interest in conservation through the lens of sports. Whether his prediction of a draw will prove correct remains to be seen, but his role as a symbol of endangered species has already captured the imagination of fans worldwide.
