Poinews.com – Recent data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) reveal that global sea surface temperatures have surged to unprecedented levels for this time of year. On 21 June, the average hit 21.0°C, surpassing the previous records of 20.83ºC in 2023 and 20.86ºC in 2024 by 0.1°C. This spike, though seemingly small, has significant implications for both marine environments and global weather patterns.

El Niño and Long-Term Climate Trends

The Equatorial Pacific’s El Niño conditions, which began on 2 June, have intensified the temperature anomaly. However, scientists emphasize that this event aligns with a longer-term warming trend driven by climate change. Outside polar regions, ocean temperatures have risen between 0.35ºC and 0.73ºC over the past three years compared to historical averages. Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), warns that these readings may signal a new era of extreme climatic conditions.

“Current conditions could indicate the beginning of a new phase, leading, once more, to uncharted territory,” Buontempo stated. “With ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months.”

The UN’s recent projections underscore the urgency of this trend. They estimate a 91% probability that at least one of the next five years will cross the 1.5°C warming threshold outlined in the Paris Agreement. Additionally, there’s an 86% chance one of those years will surpass 2024 as the hottest on record. This forecast aligns with growing concerns about the destabilizing effects of prolonged ocean heating.

Warming Oceans and Climate Impacts

Rising sea surface temperatures are not just an oceanic issue—they ripple across ecosystems and weather systems. Warm waters amplify atmospheric energy, fueling stronger storms and increasing evaporation, which can trigger heavy rainfall and flooding. These changes also accelerate sea level rise and ice melt, while stressing marine life and disrupting fisheries. Coastal economies and communities face heightened risks, with extreme heat on land potentially intensifying due to warmer ocean currents.

“Any extended period above 1.5°C threatens a whole range of extreme weather events that exceeds anything we’ve experienced in the past,” said Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London. “Many cities remain unprepared for these escalating impacts.”

Otto cautioned against overestimating El Niño’s role in climate extremes, noting that the phenomenon is cyclical while human-driven climate change continues to worsen. “It comes and goes. Climate change, on the contrary, gets worse as long as we do not stop burning fossil fuels,” she added in May. Copernicus researchers are closely tracking the situation to determine if this heat spike is temporary or part of a sustained warming pattern.
