Poinews.com – A surge of warm, arid air from North Africa is set to traverse the Iberian Peninsula from June 10th to 14th, prompting a significant temperature rise across the mainland, as reported by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). This weather shift coincides with Portugal Day, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, where temperatures are projected to climb within the 25 to 35 °C range, aligning with typical summer conditions just days ahead of the official solstice on June 21st.
Temperature Projections for the Week
Starting June 11th, the heatwave is expected to intensify, with some regions anticipating a 10-degree Celsius spike. Peak temperatures could reach 45 °C in certain areas. The 12th, Saint Anthony’s Day eve, will mark the peak of the heatwave, with highs generally hovering between 35 and 40 °C across much of the region. Overnight temperatures are also set to climb, with specific zones possibly recording lows near or surpassing 20 °C through the nights of the 13th and 14th.
“The heat will feel more intense due to a reduction in wind strength, which significantly amplifies the overall warmth,” said the IPMA.

The IPMA warns that the heatwave will persist until Saturday, June 13th, with a marginal cooling trend forecast for the 14th. A yellow heat alert remains in effect for the country until then.

Despite the sweltering conditions, the sea remains a viable option for cooling off, with water temperatures offering respite from the land heat. The IPMA highlights that the combination of rising temperatures and reduced wind will create an oppressive environment, particularly during daylight hours.
