EU Unveils Major Support for Armenia Amid Strategic Engagement
Poinews.com – During a key visit to Yerevan, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a series of significant EU support initiatives aimed at strengthening Armenia’s economic resilience against Russian influence. The measures, part of a broader strategy to deepen ties in the South Caucasus, include financial aid, tariff reductions, and commitments to visa liberalization. These steps underscore the EU’s growing role in the region, particularly as it seeks to counteract Russian economic pressures and bolster Armenia’s integration with European markets.
EU’s Economic Response to Russian Influence
Armenia’s shift toward European integration has been a central theme of von der Leyen’s visit, highlighting the country’s recent democratic reforms and pro-Western policies. She emphasized the EU’s commitment to a new financial package, the removal of trade tariffs on most Armenian goods, and the easing of visa requirements. These initiatives are designed to address the economic challenges posed by Russia, which has imposed tighter restrictions on Armenian exports. “The people of Armenia chose democracy and to partner with the European Union,” von der Leyen stated. “And together, we must now turn their aspirations into results.”
“The EU steps up when our partners face pressure. Armenia’s stability is a priority for us,” von der Leyen added, underscoring the bloc’s readiness to respond to regional challenges.
Building on her discussions with Azerbaijan, von der Leyen positioned the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process as a catalyst for greater regional cooperation. She noted that the EU’s strategic engagement with the South Caucasus is intensifying, with both countries moving closer despite historical tensions. “While Armenia is aligning with the EU, the South Caucasus is becoming a more unified region,” she said, signaling a shift toward collaborative economic and political frameworks.
Trade Liberalization and Market Access
A major component of the EU’s support package is the introduction of autonomous trade measures, which will eliminate tariffs on 80% of Armenian exports to the bloc. This allows over 99% of fresh produce and nearly 90% of beverages and spirits to enter EU markets duty-free, providing Armenia with a critical economic lifeline. The initiative reflects the EU’s commitment to diversifying trade routes and reducing dependency on Russian markets, particularly as geopolitical tensions persist.
“This measure will open European doors to nearly 99% of Armenia’s fresh fruits and vegetables,” von der Leyen said. “And this is only the beginning of our efforts to support sustainable growth.”
The EU also pledged an additional €18 million to reinforce trade cooperation, as part of a larger €52 million package announced ahead of Armenia’s June elections. This funding is intended to bolster Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s pro-Western agenda. Von der Leyen reiterated that the EU would act swiftly to address economic challenges, stating, “When pressure mounts on our partners, the EU steps up. You can count on us.”
Armenia’s government has welcomed the EU’s initiatives, with Prime Minister Pashinyan emphasizing the country’s balanced approach to its relationships. “We have always valued our ties with Russia but remain focused on securing Armenia’s future through partnerships like this,” he said. The collaboration is seen as a way to enhance economic security and diversify supply chains, offering a more stable alternative to reliance on a single major power.
