At Least Eight Killed in Massive Overnight Russian Attack on Kyiv
Poinews.com – On the early hours of Monday, Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, faced a significant assault by Russian missiles and drones, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals. The attack, which was ongoing, caused partial collapse of a residential structure in the Podilskyi district, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration, who shared updates via Telegram.
Casualties and Damage
Damage extended to several multistory buildings in the Darnytsia district, with reports indicating people were possibly trapped beneath debris. Tkachenko emphasized that these structures are where civilians reside and conduct their daily lives. Meanwhile, Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that air defenses were active and encouraged citizens to stay in shelters.
“These are residential buildings. Places where people slept and lived their ordinary lives,” Tkachenko stated.
Authorities reported seven fatalities in Kyiv and one in the Bucha district, located northwest of the city, while at least 34 others were injured across the area. Tkachenko expressed the emotional toll of the attack, saying, “There are no words that can ease this pain.”
Escalation of Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had issued a warning hours before the strike, anticipating a major Russian offensive. This incident marked the second such attack on Kyiv and its surrounding regions in under a week, reflecting the intensifying scale of hostilities. The conflict has been escalating, with both sides launching long-range strikes, highlighting the war’s expanding reach four years into Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Ukraine’s Strategic Response
In recent weeks, Ukraine has targeted Russian energy infrastructure as a way to disrupt the Kremlin’s war efforts. The nation has also struck at territories under Moscow’s control within Ukraine, dating back before the current invasion. Zelenskyy reiterated his plea for Western allies to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, especially by providing more Patriot missiles.
“Failing to replenish these defenses only emboldens Russia to prolong its four-year war,” he said in a Telegram post late Sunday.
