EU demands fairness and transparency after FIFA’s Balogun reversal

The decision came after a direct request from US President Donald Trump, who pressured FIFA President Gianni Infantino to lift the ban. Trump later praised the move as a remedy for a “great injustice,” allowing Balogun to participate in the US team’s upcoming knockout match against Belgium.
Context of the Suspension
Balogun was initially set to miss Monday’s last-16 clash against Belgium due to a straight red card received during a round-of-32 game. The card was issued after video review for his action of stepping on a Bosnian defender’s foot, resulting in a 2-0 victory for the US. Under FIFA regulations, such a red card typically leads to a one-game ban, which the player’s team cannot challenge. However, FIFA surprised observers by suspending the ban for a year.
“We respect the autonomy of sports,” said a Commission spokesperson. “We respect the right of sport federations to determine competition criteria. Any decision should be based on objective, transparent standards. We support the principle of fair play and transparent competition.”
The spokesperson avoided commenting on Balogun’s specific case, but the statement subtly criticized FIFA’s handling of the matter. Commissioner Glenn Micaleff, who leads the sports portfolio, was more direct, labeling the reversal a “wrong decision.” He emphasized that political influence on sporting matters weakens the independence of sports organizations, writing on social media: “Decisions on sporting rules and matters belong to sporting bodies, not politicians. Influencing these decisions undermines the autonomy of sport.”
Such intervention by the Commission in football affairs is rare. Yet, the controversy surrounding FIFA’s reversal has dominated headlines and political discussions. The backlash was especially strong in Belgium, where the Commission is based. UEFA denounced the move as “unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustifiable,” while the Belgian Football Federation filed a formal challenge to Balogun’s eligibility, accusing FIFA of ignoring its “legitimate requests” and setting up an appeal process deemed “immediately” inadmissible.
