Hungary’s Prime Minister Péter Magyar Proposes Judit Polgár for Presidency

Polgár, widely recognized as the most accomplished female chess player in history, has been a global figure in the sport for decades. Her legacy includes being the first woman to surpass the 2700 Elo rating mark for super-grandmasters, a feat that solidified her place in chess history.
A Champion of Consistent Excellence
Polgár’s dominance in the women’s world rankings spanned 26 years without interruption, a testament to her sustained success. She also reached the top ten of the overall world list and earned two titles as a women’s Chess Olympiad champion. Beyond her chess accolades, she was honored with the Order of Saint Stephen of Hungary and featured in the documentary *The Queen of Chess*, which chronicles her extraordinary journey.
“Our country needs unity, peace and a president in whom every Hungarian can be proud. The presidency is not a profession, not a job, but the highest form of service. The president’s duty is to serve and to represent every Hungarian,” wrote Magyar in his Sunday evening Facebook post.
Magyar emphasized that Polgár’s reputation is built on talent, perseverance, and integrity rather than political ties. “She is a Hungarian whose achievements inspire respect and admiration at home and across the world,” he added. The prime minister’s proposal follows a July photo on social media showing him playing chess with Polgár, sparking discussions about her suitability for the role.
Transition of Power and New Candidates
President Tamás Sulyok announced on Saturday evening that he would sign the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law, marking the end of his tenure. His presidency will conclude the day after the law is promulgated, with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ágnes Forsthoffer, temporarily assuming the role. Meanwhile, sixteen prominent figures from science, culture, and sport have endorsed Polgár’s candidacy in a letter addressed to Forsthoffer. The Ügyvédkör lawyers’ group, however, has nominated Péter Bárándy as their own presidential candidate.
