According to calculations by US astronomer Bill Gray and NASA, an upper stage of the rocket could unintentionally impact the lunar surface on 5 August 2026.
Panel Discussion on the Impending Event
In early July, a panel of experts convened to discuss the potential collision. The meeting was organized by NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI). While the Moon is known for its frequent impacts, this one is not planned. Lunar observer Brian Day noted that such events are part of the natural dynamics of the celestial body.
Details of the Potential Impact
The upper stage of the Falcon 9, weighing approximately four tonnes, is currently traveling at over two kilometers per second. NASA estimates that the likelihood of observing the impact from Earth is low. William Cooke, a NASA manager, remarked,
“I think it will be very, very hard to see, if not impossible.”
The prediction was first shared in September 2025 by Bill Gray, who developed the Guide astronomy software used to track near-Earth objects.
Past Incidents and Debris Concerns
Four years ago, similar events occurred when space debris struck the Moon. Images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter probe revealed the impacts, and NASA initially suspected an old Chinese rocket as the source. However, China dismissed these claims. While planned impacts are common in scientific research, this 5 August event remains accidental. As space debris accumulates, such unforeseen collisions may become more frequent.
